Overview

The intent of this project is to find External Suspension Unit (ESU) system solutions to address mobility capability gaps in certain Ground Combat Vehicles. There are two vehicle development activities that are to be addressed in this effort. The first is the Advanced Mobility Experimental Prototype - AMEP, and the second is the Platform Electrification & Mobility – PEM. Both of these development activities will be demonstrated on a surrogate Bradley Fighting Vehicle (BFV) with six (6) roadwheel stations per side. The Government is seeking an ESU system to restore the capability gap in mobility at the increased vehicle operating weights. The variable spring forces available in an ESU system can improve ride quality and suspension system tailoring for both vehicle platforms. For the PEM vehicle, ride height control will be advantageous in shipping, battle positioning, and to aid in survivability. Additionally, for the PEM vehicle, adaptive damping will provide significantly higher speed capability without increased occupant stress. With this prototype project, the intent is to provide better weight distribution between individual wheel stations, to help improve vehicle mobility performance on grades, obstacle negotiation and powertrain specific events (braking, acceleration) and also aid in meeting transportation requirements, utilizing ride height changes for vehicle movement and transportation on air/rail/sea vessels.
