Overview

This project is the primary step in a "technology transition" phase for a previous long-running RDT&E program that used several development contracts with US Army TARDEC ($21M total investment, including $1.1M SBIR) for the Manufacturing Process for Light-Weight Metal Matrix Composites. Specifically, this program will produce ceramic pre-forms with a near net shape at acceptable yields, and cast them into lightweight Aluminum MMC brake drums at acceptable production rates and costs. By increasing the capacity and throughput of current thermal processing, automation of current casting equipment, increasing thermal capability and optimizing multiple finish machining operations, the project will strive to achieve the desired results for successful transitioning to industry. Additionally, it is addressing related friction material development and manufacturing validation for brake pads used with the brake shoes designed specifically for these brake drums (i.e. a braking system).
