State of ROS 2 Presentation

Description

You are invited to join a virtual meeting on April 15th at 2:00 EDT.  The first 30 minutes will provide a summary of the findings to be immediately followed by a 60 minute session for individuals interested in a more detailed discussion of the differences between ROS 1 and ROS 2 and current state of key ROS 2 features.

Effective with the upcoming May 2020 “Foxy Fitzroy” release of ROS 2 by Open Robotics, ROS 2 will take a significant step forward, especially with respect to the ROS 2 core functions, which are now mostly completed, except for some important caveats with respect to launching and testing. Some developer tools, such as RQt, that the ROS-M community rely on are still incomplete. And no large-scale, defense robotics software development efforts with the capacity to put ROS 2 through its paces have yet been undertaken; although the first such effort (i.e. the MARS project to convert RTK to ROS 2) just kicked off and is expected to readily scale.

ROS 2, effective with the Foxy release, is now sufficiently mature for defense robotics software developers and system integrators to commence using ROS 2 on a more active, albeit still experimental basis; to become more actively engaged in the ROS-M community; and to begin factoring it into their software development plans for CY21 and beyond. To help with that, the ROS-M team recently completed a detailed study and produced a comprehensive summary report on the state of ROS 2, as of the current Eloquent release.
