ABOUT THE INITIATIVE

The National Advanced Mobility Consortium (NAMC) together with Agile Innovation Advisors (AIA), a consulting firm specializing in commercial jobs-to-be-done methodologies, collaborated with the U.S. Army Program Executive Office, Combat Support and Combat Service Support (PEO CS&CSS) and the Ordnance School on a Mission Driven Innovation (MDI) project intended to inform the Army’s envisioned Smart Motor Pool concept.

The purpose of the project was to identify, characterize, and document comprehensive, pivotal insights into the tactical, operational challenges that motor pool maintenance managers, primarily warrant officers (WOs) and non-commissioned officers (NCOs), currently and commonly experience in their efforts to ensure the readiness of a Brigade Combat Team (BCT) fleet of vehicles.  The study also served to validate the value of MDI for providing industry, especially non-traditional companies, with greater insight into problems for which the Army seeks innovative solutions.

Smart Motor Pool (SMP) 1.0 is an initiative in-line with Army Modernization and People First to seek and apply advanced technologies to its maintenance and sustainment capabilities. The Army is seeking commercial technology solutions, such as robotics, sensors, smart devices, virtual reality, digital imaging, voice recognition, artificial intelligence, machine learning, 3D printing, cloud computing, and others, to develop pragmatic solutions that address the myriad of common and everyday maintenance challenges in garrison and tactical environments.  SMP 1.0 solutions will provide capabilities and enhance Soldiers’ technical skills that significantly reduce the amount of time required to perform maintenance functions – appreciably increase the capacity and productivity of maintenance personnel, the efficiency of motor pool operations, and safety, so as to ensure the readiness of current fleet and future tactical vehicles, ground support equipment, weapon systems, navigation, and communication equipment anywhere in the world.

Smart Motor Pool 1.0 is a concept that will set the stage as an enabler of technology insertion for Smart Motor Pool 2.0 which will apply the technology, knowledge, solutions, and lessons learned from SMP 1.0 to develop future capabilities adapted to meet the needs of maintaining the next generation of hybrid, electric, autonomous, and intelligent vehicles; improving and ensuring readiness anywhere and at all times.
