Description
Background
The current US Army dismounted Infantry platoon has effective parity with potential adversaries in the close fight. This situation is basically unchanged since World War II and compares unfavorably with other warfighting units, such as fighter squadrons and tank platoons, that have seen orders of magnitude increases in capabilities in that same timeframe. We assert that AI and robotics will provide the capability necessary to create and maintain an unfair advantage on the battlefield for our ground forces.
To this end, there are current and near term, prototype, technology readiness level (TRL) 4-6 technologies that can be further matured and integrated into an organic system of systems (assets permanently assigned to and under the direct control of a warfighting unit) that could enable a dismounted Infantry platoon to operate 10 times (10X) more effectively and make better decisions 10X faster.
Government Objectives
Demonstrate a path towards a future dismounted Infantry Platoon that is upwards of 10X more effective than the current dismounted Infantry Platoon through:
- Prototype robotic systems and payloads that deliver upwards of a 10X increase in the Infantry Platoon's ability and effectiveness to conduct operations on the ground, air, water, and cyber domains, and
- Prototype artificial intelligence (AI) tools that enable Platoon leaders and Soldiers to observe, orient, decide, and act (i.e. the OODA loop) 10X faster than the current capability
Concept of Operations
Proposed technologies will be demonstrated in an attack against an enemy in a hasty defense, initially in open and rolling terrain and then transitioning to dense urban terrain (a multi-story building). Technologies will be demonstrated at the infantry fire team level by augmenting that fire team with robotic and AI capabilities. The demonstration infantry fire team will consist of a Team Leader, Automatic Rifleman, Grenadier and Rifleman, and will also include the Squad Leader and Platoon Leader.
