Member Spotlight | Ampex Data Systems

Main content

Member Spotlight | 24 April 2023

In an effort to raise awareness to NAMC member capabilities within the consortium, NAMC launched the member spotlight last year, showcasing an organization from the capability areas identified via the GVS OTA.

Moving forward, we will do a standalone company spotlight twice a month. With over 500+ members, we encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity and submit your company's information via the link below. There are a lot of exciting projects this fiscal year, and the spotlights help raise awareness to your company capabilities.

Technology Objective Area: Architecture, Security, and Modularity (ASM)
HQ: Hayward, CA
Organization Type: Nontraditional small business

Q: What is something unique about your product or service?

A: Ampex understands that there is a vast array of data types that exist throughout the DoD's weapon system portfolios. Ampex purposely builds its products to be able to ingest any data type and make it accessible to the consumer of the data. If it requires a new Input/Output configuration(s) or connection(s), our open architecture platform can adjust to meet those requirements.

A recent example of this is Ampex was recently awarded a contract in 2020 to collect all EO/IR data produced on the Army's IM-SHORAD vehicle. We are well versed in EO/IR data but with that contract award, our engineering team decided to lean forward to enhance our ground vehicle collection capabilities and invested in technology that can be applied to any of our product lines that specifically collects CAN bus data. CAN bus is a robust vehicle standard designed to allow all the systems within a vehicle to communicate. Ampex will leverage its experience and expertise to work with and collect ALL of the data that a ground vehicle system would produce, enabling anyone to collect, analyze, diagnose or troubleshoot any system. To do that, you will require an Ampex direct or networked attached system into which all of the data consolidates. Then the Army can leverage our open architecture, non-proprietary, storage and processing systems to host any GOTS diagnostic and system health software or third-party software to meet any of their vehicles' diagnostic and troubleshooting requirements.

Additionally, Ampex was approached by a leading Electro Optical/Infrared (EO/IR) turret provider and challenged us to be the first company to provide a true bit-for-bit Uncompressed Video Data Recorder (UVDR) that captures all associated metadata. We got our Research and Development team on it and produced the first UVDR in the industry that collects all associated metadata. This module that can be integrated into any of our products and provides the following benefits: Allows full use of EO/IR sensor suite capability; enables full potential of AI automatic ID algorithms… “best in best out”; true color for multispectral analysis and coherent change detection; can truly capture bit-for-bit to include valuable metadata; no loss in picture quality with digital copies; and so much more.

Q: What capability gaps are you able to fill and which industry colleagues would you like to know about them?

A: Ampex has recently allied to provide you with the most capable and reliable onboard SWaP-C optimized data acquisition and AI processing solution for any edge application in any domain.

Ampex specializes in delivering fully ruggedized, tailorable, and completely open architecture hardware platforms that can ingest any data type at speeds up to 100+ Gb/s with storage capacities up to 180+TB. We ensure you get exactly what you need by putting our best engineers in understanding your requirements and mission to give you the best hardware with size, weight, power, and cost at the forefront of our designs. If your data is sensitive, do not fret. We can also secure your data at rest or in transit via FIPS-140, Commercial Solutions for Classified (CSfC), or Type 1 encryption embedded within your solution.

Our partner brings a high-performance yet affordable AI/ML SDK that you typically see in a data center environment straight to your edge application. Compared to other AI software market leaders, their AI can process up to 6x more data while reducing processor power consumption by 50%! In addition, their AI is data agnostic regarding your applications and mission. You can bring your own algorithms or have them aid development or optimization as needed. They take pride in guaranteeing zero data losses, real-time processing, and a stable, low-cost AI solution that is entirely scalable.

Q: What do you want other NAMC Members to know about you?

A: Ampex specializes in delivering rugged, tailorable open architecture hardware platforms for data acquisition and processing for any edge application in any domain. These systems can handle any data type at extremely fast data rates (up to 100Gbps) and with ample storage capacities (180TB+) in a Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS), Modified-COTS (MCOTS), or unique form factor that meets your needs. Our engineering team will work closely with you to deliver the best hardware solutions for size, weight, power, and cost. In addition, we offer secure solutions for data-at-rest or in transit, such as AES256/FIPS 197, FIPS 140, Commercial Solutions for Classified (CSfC), and Type 1 encryption. Finally, due to our system's open architecture stance, we can host your or any third-party software that is Linux based so you can process your data at the edge. This includes Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning programs that you may be utilizing.
