How’s retirement so far?

I've delved into numerous books and cherished moments with my family. With an entrepreneurial spirit, I seek involvement in something substantial that ignites my passion for growth. While retirement can be filled effortlessly, I aspire for a fulfilling pursuit. A few ideas have sparked my interest, and I eagerly anticipate their unfolding.

How did NAMC get started?

The National Center for Defense Robotics (NCDR) was a precursor to the Robotics Technology Consortium (RTC), initially funded through Congress. As the typical funding span is about five years, nearing its end prompted the establishment of the RTC. In 2008, pivotal decisions were made to grant baseline funds to the RTC, marking the first major transition.

Although funding remained steady, the RTC found itself constrained by the limitations of the baseline funding model, hindering its potential for growth and success. Recognizing these constraints, discussions arose regarding the need for strategic advancements. This led to a shift from focusing solely on robotics technology to encompassing all ground technology. Subsequently, the evolution from the RTC to the NAMC unfolded seamlessly.

Any highs or lows of the process?

In August 2014, the RTC rebranded as the National Advanced Mobility Consortium (NAMC) and initiated a new Ground Vehicle Systems (GVS) OTA. The entire transition was completed within six months. Special thanks go to Dr. Mike Delrose from TARDEC, now GVSC, whose pivotal role on the government side facilitated the swift realization of NAMC. With the incorporation of various vehicle technologies, progress accelerated smoothly after the initial setup.

As a founder of NAMC, what have been some of its proudest moments in your eyes since it began?

NAMC's most significant source of pride lies in the impact on the Warfighter. We have played a pivotal role in advancing crucial technologies. While reflecting, one may wish for quicker progress, the technologies have proven their value through their pace and development with multiple prototype projects leading to Programs of Record. Working with talented and dedicated individuals has been immensely rewarding. Over the past two decades, I have collaborated with remarkable people committed to supporting the Warfighter.

Did you imagine NAMC going where it is today? How has it evolved since the beginning?

Alissa has played a pivotal role in shaping the processes and structure of the organization, driving NAMC’s evolution. Her vision led us to establish a core team at the organization's foundation. The creation of Fisher House was beyond my imagination, showcasing the organization's remarkable journey.

What has it been like to witness the growth of an organization that you co-founded?

We faced challenges along the way, but with the support of amazing individuals, we collaborated, persisted, and conquered those obstacles together. To not just survive, but to thrive throughout that journey was remarkable. I felt immense pride, fulfillment, and gratitude for all those incredible individuals who were part of it.

The most significant hurdles were the transitional phases. Winning certain critical contracts that were pivotal to our organization's success marked defining moments. Reflecting on our achievements, it's amazing to see how much we have accomplished.

What do you see for NAMC’s future?

The organization is well-established, with leadership poised to chart any course they choose. Knowing NAMC is in capable hands, set to flourish and support our Soldiers, is truly remarkable. It has been a rewarding two decades, yet it's time for me to step back and for them to soar. I eagerly anticipate observing their progress from a distance and celebrating their ongoing achievements.
